Guidance

The SCAQMD Wood Stove & Fireplace Change-Out Program provides vouchers between $100 and $1,850 to residents in targeted areas who replace an existing wood-burning device with a cleaner alternative. Applicants must secure a voucher before purchasing equipment and use an authorized participating retailer to qualify.

Homeowner Tasks

  • Verify property location

Confirm that your property is located in a targeted area within the South Coast AQMD.

  • Apply for and receive an official voucher

You must obtain an official voucher from SCAQMD BEFORE purchasing or installing any new equipment.

  • Submit income documentation

If applying for the enhanced low-income incentive, provide the necessary income qualification documentation to SCAQMD.

Contractor Tasks

  • Confirm authorized retailer status

Ensure your business is an authorized participating retailer/professional in the SCAQMD program.

  • Verify wood-burning replacement

Confirm that the project is replacing an existing wood-burning fireplace or stove (gas-to-gas replacements are strictly prohibited).

  • Document and destroy old equipment

If the customer is claiming the $250 destruction bonus, properly destroy the old non-certified wood stove and provide required documentation.

  • Submit the claim

Submit the rebate claim on behalf of the customer within 30 days of the installation.

Vouchers expire 4 weeks from the date of issuance. Purchase and installation must be completed within this window.
Purchasing equipment before receiving an official voucher will immediately disqualify the project from receiving the incentive.
Low-income qualified households can receive an enhanced incentive of up to an additional $1,500, but official documentation must be submitted.
Maximize the rebate by ensuring the old, non-certified wood stove is properly destroyed to claim the extra $250 destruction bonus.
