Guidance

The Vehicle Exchange Colorado (VXC) program provides a $6,000 to $9,000 point-of-sale rebate to income-qualified residents who trade in an older or emissions-failing gas vehicle for an electric vehicle (EV). Buyers must get pre-approved before purchasing at a participating dealership.

Homeowner Tasks

  • Apply for program pre-approval and verify income qualification

You must prove your household income is at or below 80% Area Median Income (AMI) or that you are enrolled in an eligible state assistance program before buying.

  • Select a participating Vehicle Exchange Colorado (VXC) dealership

The rebate is only available as a point-of-sale discount at approved, participating dealerships.

  • Trade in an eligible gas-powered vehicle

Your trade-in must be gas-powered and either 12 or more years old OR currently failing emissions tests.

  • Purchase a qualifying new or used electric vehicle

Select a new EV for a $9,000 rebate or a used EV for a $6,000 rebate.

Contractor Tasks

  • Verify the buyer's VXC program pre-approval

Ensure the buyer has been officially pre-approved by the program administrator before proceeding with the sale.

  • Confirm the trade-in vehicle meets program criteria

Verify the trade-in is a gas-powered vehicle that is 12+ years old or failing emissions.

  • Apply the rebate as a point-of-sale discount

Deduct $9,000 for a new EV purchase or $6,000 for a used EV purchase directly from the purchase price.

  • Submit the transaction documentation to APTIM

Complete the required program paperwork to get reimbursed for the point-of-sale discount.

Income qualification and program pre-approval are strictly required prior to purchasing the vehicle. You will be disqualified if you purchase the EV before getting approved.
The program has a strict end date of June 30, 2026.
To maximize your rebate, purchase a new EV to receive $9,000. Used EVs qualify for $6,000.
The program is administered by APTIM and the rebate is applied instantly at the dealership, meaning no post-purchase rebate waiting period for the buyer.
